ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta could add another 1.8 million residents over the next two decades, according to a new report.

Findings from JLL project the metro area’s population will grow from 6.1 million residents to 7.9 million by 2050.

The region has already added about 735,000 people over the past decade. More than 57% of Georgia residents currently live in the metro Atlanta area.

The region is adding an average of 147 people each day, while more than 14,000 housing units are currently under construction.

The report also puts a spotlight on the need for additional housing as the population continues to grow. Access to affordable housing will be a factor in meeting the region’s growth projections.

Job availability will also play a role. Metro Atlanta remains a leading market for business development, which is expected to continue making the region a destination for job seekers.
