The country’s largest private employer, Walmart, has a new benefit for all of its employees in the U.S.
The retailer will offer all 1.5 million workers free college tuition and books, The Washington Post reported.
The move is an effort to attract and keep workers in the current labor market.
The company will be investing $1 billion over five years for career training and programs for workers in fields like business administration, supply chain and cybersecurity as part of the Live Better U program, the Post reported.
Previously, employees who wanted to participate in the educational opportunities had to pay $1 a day, CNBC reported.
So far, more than 52,000 employees have taken part in Live Better U, with 8,000 graduating since 2018 from 10 different academic partners. Examples include the University of Arizona, Purdue University and the University of Denver, The Washington Post reported.
The program will be free beginning Aug. 16, CNBC reported.
