Suspicious Illinois family finds female body parts in suitcases of relative visiting from Kentucky

MARKHAM, Ill. — An Illinois family suspicious of a family member visiting from Kentucky made a gruesome discovery in his luggage – the dismembered remains of a woman.

Markham police Chief Terry White told CBS Chicago that the man, whose name has not yet been released, traveled Sunday from Louisville on a Greyhound bus to visit his family. Markham, located just south of Chicago, is about a four-hour drive from Louisville.

“He brought with him luggage, two, three bags,” White told the news station.

After several days, his family found it odd that he had not yet unpacked, the chief said. He also aroused suspicion by keeping a watchful eye on his suitcases.

The man also asked his family about buying some clothes, despite having multiple pieces of luggage, the Courier Journal in Louisville reported. After a few days, the bags also began to smell.

“There were some early reports of a foul odor coming from the bags,” White told CBS Chicago.

When the man left the house Tuesday to go to the public library, his relatives opened a suitcase.

“A human body part was discovered,” White said. “They immediately backed away and called police.”

Police investigators found the body parts of a woman in the man’s luggage. The chief said she is believed to possibly be a woman reported missing in Louisville last week.

Louisville police officials told WLKY that the discovery in Illinois led them to a home in the 600 block of N. Hite Street in Louisville, where they found evidence of a homicide. Charges are pending against the man, who remained in the Cook County jail on Wednesday.

The suspected victim’s name was also being withheld by authorities pending positive identification.
