San Francisco train drags woman tethered to dog leash to death

SAN FRANCISCO — A California woman was dragged to her death Monday after the doors of a Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART, train closed on the leash she was holding to walk a dog.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Amy Adams, 41, of San Francisco, and the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the Powell Street BART station tragedy, KGO-TV reported.

According to KTVU, Adams boarded a Dublin/Pleasanton-bound train at about 3:20 p.m., and the transit agency stated that as the doors were closing, she appeared to wave at someone and step off the train. The dog accompanying her was on a leash tied around Adams’ waist, however, and did not exit the train, causing the victim to be dragged down the platform and onto the tracks as the train departed.

The dog was uninjured, the TV station reported.

“It was pretty traumatic,” Mike Sim, who witnessed Adams’ death while standing on the platform and called a BART attendant, told KGO-TV.

“Everybody was in shock,” Sim added.

According to the TV station, two NTSB investigators will spend roughly one week investigating the scene, “documenting the train and platform, as well as looking at the functionality of the door system and operational procedures for directing passengers getting on and off the train.”

NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson told KGO-TV that any available recorded data, such as video surveillance, will also be scoured for insight, but a preliminary report could take as long as a month to complete.
