Reports: Warrant issued for arrest of Seahawks’ Aldon Smith in Louisiana

CHALMETTE, La. — A warrant for the arrest of Aldon Smith, an NFL defensive end who signed with the Seattle Seahawks last week, has been issued in Louisiana, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

Reporter Travis Mackel of New Orleans-based WDSU-TV tweeted Monday that Smith is being sought for an alleged battery that occurred Saturday night at the French Press Coffee House in Chalmette. Mike Triplett, who covers the New Orleans Saints for ESPN NFL Nation, confirmed the account via Twitter.

St. Bernard Parish District Attorney Perry Nicosia said Smith allegedly choked a victim unconscious inside the coffee house, ESPN reported.

The Seahawks acknowledged the reports in a statement issued around noon Monday, stating that Smith notified the team of the situation and that they are “gathering more information,” KIRO-TV reported.

According to the TV station, Smith’s NFL career has been marred by legal and substance abuse issues, resulting in his absence from the league from 2016 through 2019. He was reinstated for the 2020 season and started in all 16 games for the Dallas Cowboys.

Smith’s signing with the Seahawks was officially announced Thursday, two days before the alleged battery, KIRO-TV reported.
