ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The legacy of Susan B. Anthony is alive and well, but to make sure her story can last for the ages, her gravesite is now being protected.

Normally if someone wants to pay tribute to the late suffragist, they will visit her grave in Rochester, New York, and will leave their “I voted” sticker on her tombstone, WROC reported.

This year, though, cemetery officials decided to install a plastic shield over the marker to save it from the hundreds if not thousands of stickers expected to be left to honor Anthony.

A shield is also installed over her sister, Mary Anthony’s, headstone, The Associated Press reported.

With Election Day still a few days away, stickers have already started to appear because of early voting.

The tradition started in 2016 when as many 12,000 people visited Mount Hope Cemetery, many leaving their mark. It was the year that many Americans voted for Hillary Clinton, the female major-party presidential candidate, the AP reported.

But the marble was damaged, as seen during a restoration this spring, WROC reported.

The adhesive on the stickers, as well as the chemicals needed to remove the stickers, hurt the memorial, The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reported.

The cemetery has multiple plastic sleeves that can be swapped out when they are fully covered with stickers. Visitors can also leave the stickers on a large thank you card at Anthony’s gravesite, according to the newspaper.

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, the AP reported. To handle the expected crowds on Nov. 3, the cemetery will have police to guide visitors to her grave, while also abiding by social distancing guidelilnes. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Election Day, the Democrat & Chronicle reported.
