5 arrested in connection to rapper Pop Smoke’s death

Los Angeles police have arrested three men and two teenage boys in connection to the killing earlier this year of 20-year-old Bashar Barakah Jackson, who rapped under the name Pop Smoke.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of those arrested.

Los Angeles police Capt. Jonathan Tippet told The Associated Press the five people arrested Thursday are suspected of breaking into the home where he was staying in the Hollywood Hills early Feb. 19 after social media posts tipped them off to his location. He said they stole items from the house, though he declined to elaborate on what was taken.

He told the AP the teenagers arrested in connection to the case are 15 and 17 years old.

“We believe that it was a robbery,” he told the AP “Initially we didn’t really have the evidence but then we discovered some other evidence that showed this was likely a home invasion gone bad.”

Pop Smoke, born Bashar Barakah Jackson, gained fame with his 2019 single “Welcome to the Party,” which was later remixed by Nicki Minaj and British rapper Skepta, WNBC reported. In February he released the mixtape “Meet the Woo 2,” which debuted at No. 8 on the Rolling Stone’s albums chart, according to the magazine.
