QUIKKIES: How to keep your New Year's Resolution!

By Vikki Locke

Today is National Buffet Day, National Cream Puff Day, National Personal Trainer Awareness Day, No-Fault Divorce Day, National Run It Up the Flag Pole and See If Anybody Salutes It Day, National Science Fiction Day and National Motivation and Inspiration Day.

January 2013 is National Bath Safety Month, National Blood Donor Month, National Braille Literacy Month, National Hobby Month, Hot Tea Month, National Oatmeal Month and National Soup Month

- Cosmopolis and Little Birds are both out on DVD today

- The Daily Telegraph claims Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got married on Christmas Day in Turks and Caicos. Their six children, Pitt's family and 12 nannies attended.

- Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner got married on New Year’s Eve at the Playboy Mansion. Hugh is 86. Crystal is 26.

- The U.S. average price for a gallon of regular gas hit $3.60 in 2012. That's up 9 cents from the previous record high of $3.51 a gallon set in 2011. AAA blamed hurricanes, refinery outages and tensions in the Middle East for the high prices. AAA expects gas prices to be lower in 2013, thanks to rising domestic oil production and decreased demand.

- American Idol season eight winner Kris Allen was in a car accident yesterday. His mom Tweeted: "From Kris: he's in a lot of pain, arm broke, may not play guitar for a while. Prayers welcome please! #headoncollision. Kristopher and Katy [Allen, Kris' wife] are both pretty beat up but ALIVE! Thank you Jesus! They are setting his arm now and will have surgery tomorrow."

- An L.A. paparazzo was killed yesterday while trying to photograph Justin Bieber's Ferrari. Cops stopped Justin's friend in the car before the photographer was struck and killed by another vehicle.

New Year's Eve TV Ratings:

Dick Clark, ABC’s Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest ... 13.3 million viewers

Dick Clark primetime special .. 9.4 million viewers

NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly ... 3.8 million viewers

Trash Day: New York's Sanitation Department descended upon Times Square yesterday where they removed 40 tons of party hats, noisemakers, confetti and paper streamers. 100+ workers, 16 mechanical sweepers, 13 trucks and 14 leaf blowers cleared the New Year's Eve celebration garbage.

Some New Year's Eve revelers are upset with the NYPD because officers refused to let them leave their Times Square pens to go to the bathroom. Many people relieved themselves in bottles.

Size Does Matter: The busiest time of the year for buying televisions started yesterday. The spending period will last until the Super Bowl as consumers use gift cards and leftover Christmas cash to purchase the largest televisions available. 55-inch Sony televisions that sold for $6,000 in 2010 are now selling for $2,500. Market saturation, prices from low-cost manufacturers and online retailers are driving costs down. Consumers buy a new television set every seven years while the average household owns 2.8 TVs

50/50: A record number of divorces are expected to be filed in January because the economy is improving. Craig Holt, of QualitySolicitors.com, says the recession prevented many couples from filing because they could not afford to split their assets. “Many couples have been biding their time. However, as confidence has crept back into the market we have seen that trend begin to change significantly.”

Family law attorney Kathryn Dickerson says, "A lot of people want to begin the New Year anew. They've resolved to themselves they're not going to spend the holidays next year as they did this year. Men are more likely than women to begin divorce proceedings. Women are tired, and they just want to breathe for a little bit. For men, they've gotten through the holidays. They've maintained the image of a family for as long as they could, and they're ready to move forward."

Clinton Health Scare: Hillary Clinton was admitted to the hospital yesterday with a blood clot following her concussion. She sustained the concussion from fainting earlier in December. She had been sick for several days with the flu and had canceled a trip to Morocco where she was to officially recognize the Syrian rebels.

** UPDATE **

Clinton suffered a blood clot in a vein between her brain and skull. She is expected to make a full recovery. The clot did not result in a stroke or neurological damage and is being treated with blood thinners.

Fiscal Cliff Deal Recap: According to the Congressional Budget Office, the fiscal cliff deal cuts only $15 billion in spending while increasing tax revenues by $620 billion—a 41:1 ratio of tax increases to spending cuts. When Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush increased taxes in return for spending cuts—cuts that never ultimately came—they did so at ratios of 1:3 and 1:2.

The fiscal cliff deal will add roughly $4 trillion to the deficit

Under the tax deal, rates jump from 35 percent to 39.6 percent for individual incomes over $400,000 and family incomes over $450,000.

The wealthy also get hit with higher taxes on capital gains, dividends and inheritances over $5 million.

Low-income households would benefit from the extension of various tax credits, including ones for college tuition.

Unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless would be extended for another year.

Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner got married on New Year’s Eve at the Playboy Mansion. Hugh is 86. Crystal is 26.

9 Ways To Keep Your New Year's Resolutions from bankrate.com

1. Make it something you really want. Don't make it a resolution that you "should" want or what other people tell you to want. It has to fit with your own values.

2. Limit your list to a number you can handle. It's probably best to make two or three resolutions that you intend to keep. That way, you're focusing your efforts on the goals you truly want.

3. Be specific. To be effective, resolutions and goals need to be pretty specific. Jettison the amorphous "exercise more," in favor of "I'm working out at the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 p.m."

4. Automate. Automating financial goals can maximize your odds for success without you having to do anything. If your goal is to save $3,000 this year, calculate the amount out of each check, then arrange to have it automatically deposited into your savings account each time you get paid.

5. Make a plan. Rather than stating one daunting goal, create a series of smaller steps to reach it. Have an action plan. Figure out exactly what you want to do.

6. Be prepared to change some habits. One reason that resolutions fail is people don't change the habits that sabotage them. One potent approach is to realize that all you ever have is the present moment. So ask what you can do now that will get you closer to your goal. It could mean trade-offs such as sacrificing an hour of couch time for your new goals. That's how you get resolutions implemented.

7. Write down the goal and visualize it regularly. Writing and visualizing are effective tools for fulfilling a goal because they fix it firmly in the subconscious. And if you write down your goals, put them in a prominent place where you'll view them frequently, such as on the fridge or on your desk. Glickman keeps her important life goals and priorities on her computer's screen saver.

8. To tell or not to tell? Having someone hold you accountable can be a powerful tool. In general, making a public commitment adds motivation.

9. Forgive yourself. If you fall off the wagon, jump back on. Many people fall into the trap of believing that if they stumble, they should give up. The truth is you don't have to wait for next year or for some magic moment. Instead, realize that "slipping is part of the process.

15 Healthy New Year’s Resolutions (That You Can Actually Keep) from yourtango.com

1. Only eat when sitting down. It’s true, we tend to eat mindlessly and “graze” more when standing up. Sitting down encourages us to be present and eat with more focus–things that can prevent us from overeating.

2. Use small dinner plates. Using a smaller plate, research has shown, leads to taking smaller portions. If you’re trying to avoid overeating, this is a simple trick.

3. Park is the back row at the grocery store. If you routinely hit the grocery store two or three times a week, walking an extra quarter mile to and from the store is an easy way to get more exercise into your busy day. You can adopt this policy everywhere you park, or just at the grocery store for starters.

4. Take the stairs at work. If you are only going up a flight or two, make a promise to yourself that you will take the stairs and give your legs and lungs a little workout mid-day.

5. Switch out coffee for green tea. Green tea has a multitude of health benefits, including warding off cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, stroke and dementia. If you can’t do without your cup of joe every day, then start with just Mondays. Remember, the goal is to make small, manageable resolutions that you will keep.

6. Sign up for a 5K. Not a runner? Walk. The very act of signing up for a race will make you more accountable to lace up your sneakers and train for it.

7. Give your spouse one compliment a day. It’s so easy to nitpick and criticize our partners, but make a positive change in your relationship by offering one nice, thoughtful exchange a day.

8. Start a journal. You don’t have to write pages and pages. You don’t even have to write in it every day. But honestly jotting down your thoughts, emotions, goals and hopes can be very healing to our souls.

9. Ditch naysayers. Life is too short to surround yourself with people who are negative, thoughtless, selfish or not healthy for you. Know how to tell? Monitor how you feel when you’re around them–do you feel drained, angry, anxious or insecure? Might be time to weed them out of your life.

10. Find more positive friends. In addition to the above, make a commitment that you are going to surround yourself with those who make you feel great, warm, happy and comfortable. You’ll notice a big difference in your energy when you’re with them.

11. Give up soda. You don’t have to completely rid your diet of all sugar and processed foods (although, that’s great if you do), but replacing soda with water each day will make a huge difference in your health.

12. Sign up for a class. It doesn’t matter what it is–yoga, Zumba, dance, photography, creative writing–anything that you are interested in and want to learn more about is great. In order to keep our minds healthy, it’s important to continue learning new things.

13. Turn off the local news. You’ve probably noticed that the local news is often filled with negative, draining stories about violence, shootings, murders, thefts, etc. Definitely not a good way to start or end the day. Instead, get your news through reputable papers and online sites where you can pick and choose what you want to read.

14. Commit to vegan days. Take Meatless Mondays a step further and ditch the dairy too. Just one day a week of freeing your diet from all animal products can make a tremendous difference to your health, our environment and the life of animals who are often treated cruelly and inhumanely at factory farms.

15. Read more. Let’s turn off the TV and our computers an hour earlier each day and read. Commit to reading one book a month and feel the difference it makes in your mental and brain health.

7 New Year’s Resolutions Not To Make from thefrisky.com

1. Lose 20 Pounds: Though a common goal after your 37th snowman cookie, this is not nearly specific enough. Focus on the small, daily steps you’ll use to achieve weight loss, so that you can approach each day — and each buffet — with a fresh start. This hopefully involves increased exercise and modified eating habits, discussed below, rather than just that wishbone you battled over with cousin Lenny.

2. Get Out of Debt: This can be difficult because it’s an avoidance goal rather than an approach goal, as are “Spend Less,” “Stop Wasting Money,” and “Ignore the Siren Song of the Overpriced Latte.” Focus on the positive, not the negative. Come up with a weekly dollar amount to sock away or pay off, or a specific item or service that you’ll find a way to do more cheaply. Then track your results weekly.

3. Get Organized: You can start by streamlining this goal itself. “Donate, recycle or trash four items each night” is much better than “Get the house under control,” just as “Develop a neater home for my keys, crumpled takeout menus, and junk mail” is much better than “Cut down on clutter.”

4. Be a Better Person: Who’s going to assess your progress on this, a focus group of willing strangers? Instead, pick a specific behavior you can measure yourself. “Volunteer in February at the Food Bank on 2nd Street.” “Make a list of birthdays for the kitchen cabinet and vow to get at least 5 cards out on time.” Or, we all can dream: “Wait more than a nanosecond before honking after the light turns green.”

5, Exercise More: Here, you need a much better behavioral yardstick, so that you can reward yourself when you measure up. “Take the stairs to my office on Mondays,” or “Park in that way-off spot on Fridays,” would jumpstart much more tangible progress.

6. Quit Smoking: This is a healthy goal, no doubt — but it’s also one that can be frustrating and unmotivating. After all, how will you know when you’ve achieved it? Spell out the steps you’ll use, and give yourself plenty of reinforcement for mini-milestones along the way. Here’s something better: “Use the patch and an online support group to have a smoke-free week by Valentine’s Day.”

7. Eat Better: Once again, vagueness is this resolution’s downfall. Sure, we can guess it involves becoming less intimate with the vending machine, but just what are the specific steps you’ll take to do that? Instead, try “Order something naturally green for Tuesday lunch,” “Replace my linguine with whole wheat,” or “Try a new vegetarian recipe on the 15th of each month”—and give yourself a pat on the back.

I’ve been going out with my lovely Sue for ages and I decided it was time to pop the question. She’s gorgeous and makes me very happy — though she likes to stay out of the limelight.
