The University of Toledo Medical Center suspended its kidney transplant program after a nurse accidentally threw out a healthy kidney during surgery. TOM GOT OFF CHEAP IN DIVORCE FROM KATIE!

Katie Holmes did not get a huge payout when she divorced Tom Cruise last month.  Sources tell TMZ that, per their prenup, Katie did not get a lump sum payment as part of their settlement. She will get $400,000 a year in child support for daughter Suri, which isn’t that much when you consider Tom is worth $250 million. Tom will pay the support for the next 12 years (until Suri’s 18), and must also pay her expenses, like medical, dental, insurance, education, college and extracurricular costs. Tom and Katie also agreed that Suri will never go to a “residential school,” meaning she won’t be shipped off to boarding school, whether it’s Scientology or some other type.

USHER WINS CUSTODY OF HIS SONS!

Usher was victorious in his custody battle with ex-wife Tameka Foster.  A judge Friday awarded the R&B star full custody of the coupe’s two sons.  Both sides tried to strip the other of custody, with Tameka arguing Usher was too caught up in his career to be a good dad, and that he had used drugs in front of the boys. Usher called Tameka an inattentive and irresponsible parent.  But the judge agreed with Usher, and gave him full custody. Tameka will still have some custodial rights, but it is currently unclear how much she’ll be able to see the kids.  TMZ reports that Tameka plans to appeal, and feels the judge in the case may have been biased, after discovering that Usher’s lawyer’s firm threw a fundraiser for him in 2008.

One pop star not in the mix for the remaining American Idol judges spot is Katy Perry, although producers are not too happy about it.   Reports claim producers offered Perry $20 million to do the show, relentlessly pursuing her for weeks, but she still turned them down.  Katy said she wasn’t interested because not only was her schedule too busy to accommodate the program, but she just felt the gig was not a good career choice for her.

UTAH NBC AFFILIATE REFUSES TO AIR THE NEW NORMAL!

An NBC affiliate in Utah on Friday announced they would not air the freshman comedy The New Normal, which is about a homosexual couple who hires a surrogate in order to start a family. KSL-TV, which also refused to air last season’s The Playboy Club, cited crude language and offensive characterizations as the reason for pulling the show.  “After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule," KSL CEO Jeff Simpson said. "For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.” Needless to say, the gay rights group GLAAD was not happy.  "Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Grey’s Anatomy," GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country." The New Normal premieres Tuesday, Septembe 11th at 9:30 pm.

LL COOL J BURGLAR CHARGED!

The homeless man who broke into LL Cool J’s home last week has been charged with first-degree burglary. Jonathan Kirby was subdued by the NCIS: Los Angeles star early Wednesday morning, and suffered a broken nose, jaw and ribs at the hands of the actor. Kirby faces a maximum of 38 years to life in prison if convicted because of his past criminal record, which includes convictions for voluntary manslaughter, burglary and petty theft.

TMZ reports that the suicide note left by director Tony Scott did not explain why he decided to take his own life. RANDY TRAVIS CITED IN CHURCH FIGHT!

More trouble for Randy Travis… The country star was cited for simple assault in Texas Friday after getting into a fight in a church parking lot. Cops tell TMZ they were called to the church at around 1 am after getting a report of two men fighting.  Both men were eventually taken to the hospital, and, a source says Randy was “extremely intoxicated.” Cops say Randy was fighting with the ex-boyfriend of his current fiancee.  Earlier this month, a drunk and naked Randy was arrested for DUI after he was found lying in the middle of the road next to his crashed car. He was also busted back in February for being drunk in a different church parking lot. Meanwhile, Saturday morning, cops found Randy’s truck flipped over on the side of the road, but a lawyer for the country star said he hadn’t driven it in months.

Martin Scorsese on Friday responded to a lawsuit filed last week by Cecchi Gori Pictures, which claim he owes them money for a consistently delayed project called Silence.  “It is shocking to us that the lawyers for Cecchi Gori Pictures would file a suit pursuing such absurd claims…The claims asserted are completely contradicted by, inconsistent with, and contrary to the express terms of an agreement entered into by the parties last year,” said the director’s lawyer. “The lawsuit filing on the eve of Mr. Scorsese starting another picture has all the earmarks of a media stunt. Mr. Scorsese is confident that he will prevail in court should Cecchi Gori Pictures actually pursue this meritless action.”

Four Unexpected Things That Can Make You Smarter

 Everyone's always a little dumber on a Monday.  So here's a list of four strange things that can make you SMARTER . . . or at least make your brain work SLIGHTLY better for a little while.

#1.)  Being in a Bad Mood.  One Australian study found that when people watched short films about things like death and cancer, they did better on math tests.

 --They were also better at recalling past events, and less likely to believe a rumor that wasn't true.

  --A separate study from the Columbia Business School found that frowning made people more attentive and detail-oriented.

 #2.)  Dancing.  A recent study in "The New England Journal of Medicine" found that reading and doing crosswords reduced the risk of developing dementia by about 50%.

 --Meanwhile, most physical activities . . . including golf and swimming . . . didn't have many benefits.  But DANCING reduced the risk of dementia by 76%.

 --The researchers think it's because most physical activities are basically the same thing over and over again.

  --But with dancing, your brain constantly has to fire off signals to move different parts of your body in weird ways.  So it develops new neural pathways to keep up.  Even in young people, they found that dancing can improve brain function.

 #3.)  Cigarettes.  The pros definitely don't outweigh the cons, but the nicotine in cigarettes has actually been shown to have POSITIVE effects on your memory and your ability to learn.

--Researchers at the University of Amsterdam tested nicotine patches on Alzheimer's patients, and found that after regular doses, they answered memory-based questions two times faster, and their memories were much more consistent.

 --It also might have similar effects for younger people too.  In a different study, scientists gave small doses of nicotine to adolescent mice.

 --Then they tested them a few months later, and the mice they'd been giving nicotine to were able to learn faster and perform better on tests.

#4.)  Your Clothing.  In one study, researchers had two different groups take a test.  Half of them were in normal clothes, and the other half were given lab coats to wear.  The ones in lab coats ended up making half as many mistakes.

 --In a second study, they had people wear lab coats again, but told some of them that they were wearing a PAINTER'S coat.  The ones who knew they were in lab coats still did well, but the ones who thought they were in painters' coats didn't.

--The researchers concluded that wearing a lab coat makes you FEEL smarter, which results in you performing better and making fewer mistakes
