Sometimes I wanna be an ostrich with my head in the sand.  It can be overwhelming parenting young adults.  The fine line between them becoming their own person, and you needing to maintain authority can be treacherous to walk.  I think it was psychologist Eric Erikson that had an emotional model for people as they age, and that the teenage years mirror the toddler terrible two years...and the struggle in that one is "Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt."

So I as a parent want my child to feel autonomous with as little shame and self doubt as possible.  Hard stuff.  And then to read up on all the ways those little autonomous, sneaky young adults try to get "high" just leave me shaking my head. Check out this article here.  It was written back in August, so maybe you've heard of NEW stupid things kids do!

Have you heard of "planking"?  Yikes.  I wanna believe our kids are smart enough to say no to these things, but we forget the power of peer pressure at that age.  What happened to "quarters" and "hunch punch"?  Oh yeah, those were the things MY parents said were stupid.  Does a parent's worry ever end?  Hopefully we bring 'em up right, then trust they know what to do when the time comes.  I think it's called "letting go" ! What a concept!

Have a fantastic day, and thanks for listening at work. Know You're Loved....Jordo
