Forget the CRCT...With the new school year well underway, your child's behavior might be telling you he or she needs a little help in the way they are taught. Red flags are usually raised in this time frame...about Johnny can't sit still, or Lisa likes to read, but she can't spell...way too many notes from the teacher indicating something is amiss. It may be time to have your child evaluated for learning disabilities. Now I firmly believe that kids are kids, and I think a ton of children are diagnosed incorrectly just because it's easier to put them on meds than to be a parent/teacher who knows how to enforce consequences. That said, I do also believe that some of our darlings need help with the way knowledge is imparted to them. Whether a child needs certain medicines to be able to hear/understand what is being taught, or whether different means of teaching is necessary is what evaluation is all about. By law, the State of Georgia must test your child without cost to you. Please read the New York Times article to get even more information.
If you think your child should be evaluated, take the first step and ask for a meeting with their teacher and principal.
BTW, a lot of these kids are brilliant! They just need a little help organizing and processing. Although a lot of my behavior in school was due to "just being a kid", I wish I'd been tested. I think if I'd had Ritalin or a different Attention Deficit Disorder drug, my mind would've been working on all 8 cylinders instead of just 4. Who knows, I might've been brilliant by now!
