I Could Afford it THEN !

By Jordan Graye

I remember the first job I ever had was concessions at Phipps Plaza Movie Theatres.  This was back when there were two screens downstairs, and the Penthouse upstairs.  I made minimum wage, although for the life of me, I can’t remember what that was back in 1976.  It was just enough to hang out with my friends at either Lenox Square or Perimeter mall on weekends…I’d squander it on useless stuff like puka shell necklaces at Spencer’s Gifts (yes, they’re older than dirt).  I was lucky enough to not have to help my parents pay for the basics. Very blessed.  I knew some kids in highschool that HAD to work to help out with household bills.  And I bet their character is a little better tweaked than mine because of it.

I started wondering how you pay for the bare necessities on minimum wage especially when you have kids?  There’s daycare, which might be more expensive than the money earned and would put you in the hole.  Resourcefulness is a must, thrifting, coupons, and many people get it down to an art form.

Ran across an article comparing what minimum wage bought then and now.  Stunning how the cost of living has skyrocketed.  I think the “best” year for minimum wage was 1968…you could buy the most at that time. Take a look at the comparisons here:
