Should Teens Read Adult Books?

Hunger Games

With all the talk about The Hunger Games and how they're marketed to teens/tweens and questions about SHOULD they be?... I started thinking back to when I was that age.  Did I read any age inappropriate books?  As God is my witness to reading page 27 of the Godfather in 7th grade, you betcha!

Should teens read adult books?  Here's a cool article I found on the Arts and Letters Daily website

Obviously it depends on which ones...should my mom have let me read The Exorcist in 7th grade.  Heck to the NO.  Although I begged and begged (she was reading it and would tell me about certain scary parts).  Should my dad have taken me to the movie in its 52nd week at Phipps Plaza Penthouse Theatre?  No way.  Even though I begged.  Couldn't sleep for 6 months.  My friend's mom, Mrs. Walker, would get so worried about me when we had spend-the-nights at their house.

However, in 8th grade one day when I was bored out of my skull, my dad handed me a crimson covered paperback.  He said it was the best book he ever read when he was a teenager...he'd sneaked it from  his parents' library.  I thought "Oh wow, how boring is THIS gonna be if my electrical engineer dad liked it?"  So it stayed buried in my chest of drawers for two years when finally as a 10th grader I found it after my mom made me clean my room.  There it was.  My dad's favorite book. Should I? Yes.  Because I was quite bored again.  Turned out to be the best book I ever read as a teenager!  And I found out my dad wasn't boring at all, and that in fact, he might be pretty cool!

It was Salinger's  "Catcher In The Rye"

What was your favorite age inappropriate book?

Know You're Loved.  Happy Reading!
