Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is believed to have died in the 5th century on March 17th, and for over a thousand years, St. Patrick’s Day has been observed in Ireland as a religious holiday (he is said to have brought Christianity to the Pagan country.) It occurs during Lent where consumption of meat is prohibited. However, for one day this is waived…and all would dance, drink, and feast on bacon and cabbage. We added the green beer much later!
Most interesting, the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place here in the States on March 17th 1762. (even before our independence from England!)
