Low to mid 100's this holiday weekend, and it ain't droppin' til the actual holiday, July 4th, next week...then it will be a mere 95 degrees in the A.T.L.! Most home air conditioning units can only cool to about 20 degrees below outside temps, so in the thick of it, we'll still be in 80 degree weather INSIDE! But not everyone has an AC Unit in their house, and that's what worries me about our babies and seniors. If you need safe shelter during the scorching midday temps, check out this site for centers around town. If you have an elderly neighbor or family member, please check on them throughout the day, and make sure they drink water as if it's MEDICINE...fill up a glass and make sure at least every hour they drink til it's gone...Make it a regimen.
The other thing is forgetting people in the car...like leaving them there in this heat. It's easy to judge "how can that dad or mom leave their baby in the car"? Well, if that baby isn't crying, giggling, or making noises, it's EASY to be so preoccupied with what you're doing, that you just forget they're there. So put your briefcase or purse next to your baby in the back seat so you CAN'T forget them! And make sure your baby is hydrated as well. Try a bottle of mostly water with a tee-ninecy bit of juice.
And while this is a holiday weekend (ONE of them anyway, never sure which weekend is the actual one with the holiday on a Weds) the temptation for beer and alcohol is fierce, but it's the worst thing you can possibly do if you're trying to stay hydrated. Alcohol is a diuretic. So is coffee/tea. So between Beer, Sweet Tea, and WATER...hmmm, which one is better?! Yes, WATER all by itself with no powders, sugars, or lemons added. I know, a Braves game isn't the same without a beer to wash down the hotdog, and the pool isn't the same without the pitcher of Margaritas, but right now and for the next few days it's not the thing to do to keep your body functioning in it's glorious splendor! Our bodies are amazing machines, but I need to help mine out every now and then.
So stay cool, close the blinds, run the fans, DRINK THE WATER, and stay away from the booze! You COULD spend the next few days at Lanier World at Lake Lanier Islands Resort...we're giving away passes this weekend, with a grand prize of Legacy Lodge! Check it out at http://www.b985.com and thanks so much for listening, and good luck!
Let's raise a water glass for a Happy and Safe Birthday America! Clink!
