How Does Your Garden Grow?

By Jordan Graye

Back in the early '70s I planted some cucumbers right by the trashcans on the side of our house.  We lived in Derby Hills, a quiet neighborhood off Peachtree Dunwoody at Windsor Pkwy, and although there was a huge horse pasture across the street (now the YMCA soccer fields), it was by no means considered an agricultural area...however, just a few minutes from my house when I rode the 92Marta bus to Perimeter Mall I would always chuckle at the grassy pasture with the lone brick chimney on Hammond Dr.  Never saw any cows, though!  My how things change.  So back to the cucumbers...it didn't take too long to grow, and I was amazed that I could actually eat something that I planted!  I didn't have to go to the grocery store or ANYTHING!  Just take 'em inside, wash 'em off and chow down.

Sometimes when I hear about gas prices sky rocketing, I start getting paranoid about food and water.  Will that be the case there, too?  News reports just this morning say there'll be a high cost of corn which in turn raises the cost of everything else that uses corn (animals, etc.) so I'm thinking I need to plant more cucumbers!  And anything else I can get away with so I won't be so dependent on businesses for my food.  The only problem is, I can kill a cactus!  So If you need help like I do, check out this article on how to get started on your urban farm.  And I just might become vegan after all!  Cheaper for sure!

Do you urban farm already?  Would love to know how it's workin' for ya.   And thanks for listening while you work!
