I'm Not Dead Just Retiring!

I guess when you’ve worked with someone for 22 years, and they decide to hang up the headphones, it’s just gonna feel like a death…a big bad hurt.  I am so blessed to have worked with this consummate professional for the time that we’ve had here at this amazing company, and words cannot even begin to  express the emotions running through my heart.

Kelly McCoy has been the “lighthouse” of Atlanta radio for 27 years at B98.5FM.  A beacon.  Steadfast. Unwavering. Those golden pipes getting us home every day after work.  He helped me get my gig here as a part timer back in 1989.  I begged for one overnight a week (Fridays at midnight to 6am on Saturdays). We had some gruesome aircheck sessions in his office, and he was always so kind to me as I was trying to crawl under the wall-to-wall shag carpeting!   Those aircheck sessions were painful for me, but invaluable as he helped me with my craft.  I always thought “Gosh, if I can be as smooth as he is, I’ll have it made”!  Well, I’m still working on the smooth part, but I’ve definitely had it made for over two decades working with Kelly Mac!  I will miss him as a co-worker AND a LISTENER.

His leaving triggers the end of something inside of me, and I feel sad.   I hate to grieve!  But that’s the price of a fantastic connection.   Maybe it’s a connection you didn’t even know you were forming with him, you just knew he was always there with you as you pushed the chair in under your desk before you left the office, and when you got in the car or on Marta, you knew you were riding home with a friend.

It will never be the same, but that’s the beauty of cycles!  It’s never MEANT to be the same.  Kelly has had a nice long cycle and moving into new ventures now… Ready to scale the next mountain!

B98.5FM is cycling with us.  And you and I will continue the whirlwind ride creating new memories with a new afternoon voice on the same station that’s been here since the beginning of time!

Yes, the beauty of cycles.  Cheers!  HERE’S TO YOU KELLY McCOY !         Thank you,  and I love  you.

(I gotta go find tissues, have a great weekend!  Know You’re Loved)
