Everyday Heroes

By Jordan Graye

Heroic (noun):  determined effort especially in the face of difficulty (Merriam-Webster)

It seems to be spreading these days!  News reports claim Newark N.J. Mayor Cory Booker ran into his neighbor’s burning house and carried her to safety.  He said he “felt extreme terror.”  But he did it anyway. WOW.

In a day and age that seems so very narcissistic, it warms my heart to hear stories of heroism… it’s such a selfless act of love.  I just read where a 15 year old girl rescued about 25 horses from a burning barn in Illinois.  Check out this story: http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/13/11181218-teen-girl-saves-25-horses-from-stable-fire?lite  (sorry if link isn't working)

Have you been a hero to someone?  Has someone been a hero to you?  And I’m not talking anything dramatic like these stories…I’m talking  about being scared but doing it anyway because you knew someone was counting on you.  The definition of courage is “fear that has said its prayers”!  Like what about an agoraphobic going to her child’s high school or college graduation?  These seemingly “little” things make huge impacts.   Sometimes we are heroes just for getting out of bed and striving forward…looking for the job, finding the family monetary assistance, trying to sell your house in this horrible climate.  Good for you!  Keep going! Eyes of the prize, right?

Pay attention throughout your day, and notice when you feel afraid (sometimes fear is masked as anger).  Do you shy away, or do it anyway?

Everyday heroes RULE!
