Santa? or NO

Previous Posts

By Jordan Graye

I was born in Houston, TX and lived there for my first 7 years.  We'd always travel to Montgomery AL  for Christmas because both of my parents hail from "Monkey Town" as I called it in my juvenile comedic delerium.  But leading up to the big holiday one day when I was 6, before we left for Babaw and Papaw's, my whole world was rocked by my best friend Tracy Samuels.  She was a good Jewish girl that lived down the street, and we played together every single day.

One day in particular when I was bragging about getting my picture taken with Santa, she not so politely informed me there was no Santa.  Then her sister, Patty, chimed in and agreed "There is NO SANTA."  I told them they were crazy then we went back to playing kick the can.

Well, when I got home I told my mom that "Patty and Tracy said there's no Santa Claus, can you belive that?"  My mom fell silent for a few seconds too many, and I knew something was wrong.  She finally said, "well, actually.....they're right, sweetie."    I was so confused, but mostly because I felt betrayed by my mother.  Why would she lie to me?

I never forgot that...so when I had my own baby, I vowed to not lie, but to share Santa with her in a way that makes him part of the "spirit of Christmas."  She's so smart, though, because she figured it out very early!!!

What are your thoughts on telling kids about Santa?  How did you do it?  Have I messed up my daughter for life?!!!

Know you're Loved!
