The father of Aimee Copeland says his 24-year-old daughter is making excellent progress just days after she was released from Doctor's Hospital in Augusta. Andy Copeland tells WSB during an interview on Tuesday that Aimee is now learning to get around with the help of a new tool.
"On Tuesday Aimee learned to maneuver her new motorized wheelchair by herself and even took a whirl in the rehab facilities new gym." Andy Copeland said.
Dad describes the new wheelchair as having a "V" shaped handle that allows Aimee to place her arms in and direct it to turn left or right.
Aimee Copeland is expected to spend the next six to eight weeks in rehab to continue her recovery from the bacteria she contracted from a wound she suffered after falling from a homemade zip line on May 1st of this year.
On Monday of this week she left Doctor's Hospital in Augusta and headed to an undisclosed rehabilitation center in Georgia.
While the University of West Georgia grad student is recovering, her father and teams of volunteers, mostly contractors, architects and designers are feverishly working to build a new two-story wing that Aimee will occupy at her parents Snellville home.
Norcross architect Rob Ponder has agreed to design the 1,800 square-foot addition which will have two floors, an elevator, bedroom, upstairs fitness room, a sun room and study.
But, Andy Copeland says another company has now come forward to help get Aimee's wing completed. "Pulte Homes has agreed to help with all the labor and the landscaping."
Andy says he's amazed with the outpour of help and support they've received on Aimee's behalf. He was worried that the construction project might not be completed by the time Aimee gets to come to their Snellville home from rehab. That will be about 6-to-8 weeks.
