BOWLING GREEN, Ky. —

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul was more seriously injured than previously reported in an attack by his neighbor at Paul’s Bowling Green home on Friday.

The Kentucky Republican suffered five broken ribs and bruises to his lungs, which left the senator in “considerable pain,” one of Paul’s advisors told The New York Times.

He also had cuts to his nose and mouth and trouble breathing because of his rib injuries, according to NBC News.

Police had described Paul’s injuries as “minor” Friday after his neighbor, identified as 59-year-old Rene Boucher, tackled him from behind.

"Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault," Paul spokesman Kelsey Cooper told the Bowling Green Daily News. "The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police."

Boucher, a doctor, was released on a $7500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, the NYT reported.
It's still unclear exactly what sparked the altercation, although one neighbor told a local news outlet that the two had "ongoing problems."

Paul's injuries could prevent him from traveling back to Washington any time soon.
