That opening weekend wasn't too exciting. No real surprises, no upsets, just a bunch of blah against Division 9 competition. Let's get to this week's action.
|Kent State||Temple||7:00 pm||ESPNU|
|Western Michigan||Tennessee State||7:00 pm||BigWest.TV|
|Akron||Saint Mary's (CA)||3:00 am||ESPN2|
Hey we finally maybe get to watch a Western Michigan game! Or we at least get to be awake to follow along. The Broncos played pretty well in the last two games, beating tournament favorite New Mexico State before losing to Hawaii. Shayne Whittington will finally be in uniform for this game after being suspended for the first two. Kent State-Temple and Akron-Saint Mary's are a part of the ESPN 24-Hour Tip-Off Marathon, and kudos to you if you watch all 24 hours. Unfortunately the Akron game will have to be DVR'd for me. Kent State and Temple should be a fun one.
|Concordia||Eastern Michigan||7:00 pm||MACDN|
|Taylor||Ball State||7:00 pm||MACDN|
|Ohio||Ohio State||8:00 pm||BTN|
|Central Michigan||Bradley||8:00 pm||No TV|
|Miami||Arizona State||9:00 pm||Pac-12 Net|
Ohio-Ohio State is the most interesting game of the night, even if it won't be that close. It's too bad Central Michigan won't be online free anywhere, because this should be a good game. It'll be a good barometer for what to expect from the Chips this year. Eastern Michigan and Ball State get awful opponents, and Miami will try to pull the upset in Tempe.
|Buffalo||Niagara||7:00 pm||No TV|
|Kent State||Seton Hall||7:00 pm||Fox Sports 2|
A light slate here, but both games are of good quality. Niagara won the MAAC last year but lost in the first round of the NIT. The schools are just twenty miles away, so it would be cool to see these two start a competitive rivalry. It seems when one is good the other is terrible, so this year could be different. Kent State always knocks off a low high-major every year, and this could be it. Seton Hall isn't great and with it being early in the season it wouldn't surprise me to see Kent win.
|Toledo||Boston College||7:00 pm||ESPN3|
|Robert Morris||Eastern Michigan||7:00 pm||MACDN|
Eastern Michigan finally gets some decent competition in Bobby Mo. The Colonials knocked off Kentucky in the first round of the NIT last year, so they're a quality team. Toledo has a really good shot of beating the Eagles, even in Chestnut Hill.
|South Florida||Bowling Green||8:30 pm||ESPN3|
|James Madison||Northern Illinois||9:00 pm||MACDN|
Bowling Green's marquee non-conference game is Friday, as they host the Bulls from South Florida. Northern Illinois gets another winnable game against James Madison as a part of their own multi-team event.
|Akron||Middle Tennessee||3:00 pm||No TV|
|West Virginia Wesleyan||Buffalo||3:00 pm||MACDN|
|Pepperdine||Central Michigan||6:30 pm||MACDN|
|San Jose State||Northern Illinois||9:00 pm||MACDN|
A slow Saturday, but a great game nonetheless between the Zips and Blue Raiders. These two have played the past two years with each team winning one. Last year's game was a fantastic overtime affair and this year the Zips have to travel to Murfreesboro. Buffalo gets a laugher and Central Michigan hosts a quality opponent in Pepperdine. Northern Illinois faces the second opponent in their Invitational in San Jose State, someone they can actually beat.
|Alabama A&M||Western Michigan||2:00 pm||MACDN|
|Saint Peter's||Kent State||2:00 pm||MACDN|
|Wisconsin-Milwaukee||Northern Illinois||4:30 pm||MACDN|
First of all I have no idea why the MAC schedules all their games at the same time. I mean, other people want to watch the games and not have to have three screens open. These games could easily be at noon, two, four, and six and everyone would win. It's not like the MAC arenas are being used for anything else on a Sunday.
I digress. Three really good games dot the schedule as everyone but Western Michigan faces a similar opponent. Valparaiso isn't as good as last year, but they're still Valpo. Saint Peter's isn't a slouch, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee closes out the Northern Illinois Invitational. Akeem Springs will return to DeKalb, this time as a Panther.
