The park is bustling with activity and on a sunny afternoon, it’s not uncommon to find children swinging on the jungle gym, college students on the tennis court or a group of friends joining in pick-up basketball game.A group of friends has committed to renovating the basketball court at Moultrie Park in memory of their friend who loved playing basketball there.Hawkins Wilber moved to Charleston in 2006 to attend the College of Charleston and immediately fell in love with the court by the lake. An avid basketball player since early childhood, Hawkins organized games there at least weekly with friends and strangers, long-time players and beginners. He always set a positive tone on the court. Hawkins tragically lost his life in April 2012, leaving behind friends, family and those whose lives he enriched.Hawkins’ friends approached the Charleston Parks Conservancy about renovating the basketball court. The Conservancy will accept donations on behalf of the project while the planning committee raises funds and coordinates the renovation. The committee plans to dedicate this new court to the sportsmanship, competitive play and love for the game of basketball that Hawkins embodied in life. The proposed renovation plan includes the construction of two courts separated by a row of benches for spectators. The first court will have two 8-foot goals dedicated to youth play while the other will be a half court with one regulation-size 10-foot goal.
