Artists often say that writing a statement is harder than creating their work. BURNAWAY Magazine proudly presents Artist Statement Writing Workshops, a one-day writing workshop for emerging and mid-career artists in partnership with Abernathy Arts Center. We aim to encourage growth by demystifying the writing process and allowing artists to share feedback with each other. Instructor Shara Hughes, a practicing artist in Atlanta will conduct a one day workshop focusing on the art of the artist statement. Hughes grew up here in Atlanta, GA. She received her BFA at Rhode Island School of Design, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011. Along with founding partner Ben Steele, Hughes operates SEEK ATL—a studio visit group that meets monthly in an artists’ studio for conversation and critique. Shara first solo show in Atlanta, Don’t Tell Anyone But… was at The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in the spring of 2013. She is a recipient of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia’s 2012/13 Working Artist Project award, and is internationally well exhibited in cities such as London, Copenhagen, Berlin and Turin. She is represented by American Contemporary in New York City.
The one day workshop will be limited to ten participants to maximize the potential for peer-to-peer dialogue. Preference will be given to BURNAWAY members, but otherwise, we will accept applicants on a first-come basis. If your session fills up, we will offer you a spot on future available dates. Please contact us if you have any questions.
