Proceeds from the Glitter Gala & Auction support the important and invaluable work GABWA provides through the GABWA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that offers scholarships, mentoring, and pro bono legal services. During the Glitter Gala, GABWA will announce the recipients of its 2013 Founders Awards. The Founders Awards were established in 2006 to recognize the accomplishments of women and organizations that embody the mission of GABWA and the legacy of its Founders: Former Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, Judge Bensonetta Tipton Lane, and Judge Barbara A. Harris. GABWA was founded in 1981 to advocate for women and children and to empower communities throughout the State of Georgia. In 1983, GABWA formed the Foundation to oversee its charitable efforts. Since 2002, the GABWA Foundation has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to deserving African-American women law students. In addition, the Foundation has served other segments of the community through programs including the Sister-to-Sister Mentoring Program and the Civil Pro Bono Project. In recent years, the Foundation has expanded its work to include other initiatives and efforts in the community such as donating $9,000 to the Isabel Webster Gates Nursery at the Andrew and Walter Young Southwest YMCA in Atlanta, lending volunteers in the annual back-to-school efforts of AIM, Inc. (now known as Foreverfamily Inc.), and developing the Wills and Advanced Health Directives Initiative.
