Welcome to our final regular round, Round Six, of the Old World and New World Wines. Ted Field is going all out, pitting his Italian selections against Nance Donaldson’s Argentine wine selections. Both have announced that their wines will win. Here is your chance to taste the Old World/New World difference….and be a wine judge! The two top wines will face off against ones from the first five rounds in the semifinal rounds beginning in June. Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world and has overtaken France as the world's largest wine producer. Italian wine is exported around the world and is also extremely popular in Italy: Italians rank fifth on the world wine consumption list by volume with 42 liters per capita consumption. Grapes are grown in almost every region of the country and there are more than one million vineyards under cultivation. The Argentine wine industry is the fifth largest producer of wine in the world after France, Italy, Spain and the USA in that order. Yet it is only very recently - over the last ten or fifteen years - that the industry has really begun to develop the methods, attitudes and will to become a serious player in the international wine market. High volume, low quality vines are being replaced by premium varieties with wines now that are increasingly recognized as being amongst the best in the world. The Old World New World Challenge began with a face-off between California vs. Italy in Round One, France vs. Oregon in Round Two, Spain vs. Chile in Round Three, the French Burgundy Region vs. New Zealand in Round Four and lastly the French Bordeaux Region vs. Washington State. The first five rounds were highly rated by the participants. Now you have a chance to taste the Old World wines of Italy vs. the New World wines of Argentina, i.e. Ted vs. Nance. This one should be just as much fun with Ted and Nance sparring off. We will seat each at the opposite ends of the table. Our tasting will be treated to a selection of delectable artisan cheeses, breads, and crackers.
