This concert features the regional premiere of a 2012 work by American David Schiff, "Class of 1915." The work is an appealing quintet for flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, cello and piano in the setting of Americana jazz, rags and blues. The National Finals competition of the 2012-2013 Rapido! Take Three!! 14 Day Composition Contest caps the concert. Five finalist works previously chosen in fall 2012 concerts in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco and Atlanta will compete for the National First Prize Commission to expand the short winning work, leading to premieres the next season by chamber ensembles in all five U.S. cities – as well as a commission and premiere by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The exciting competition concert will feature all five finalist composers in attendance, plus the distinguished judging team of ASO Music Director Robert Spano and Atlanta School of Composers Michael Gandolfi and Jennifer Higdon.
