The 20-voice ensemble, under the direction of John Whitt, presents choral music from Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Colombia, Canada, and the Sacred Harp tradition of Early America. Featured composers include Bermúdez, Hidalgo, Araujo, Bravo and Velasco, Bevan, Jean de Brébeuf, Ingalls, Clark, Stephenson, and Billings. Since 1974 Atlanta Schola Cantorum has specialized in the performance of Renaissance polyphony as well as the works of notable contemporary composers. This concert marks the beginning of the sixth season under the direction of John Whitt, who is also the organist and choirmaster at St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Atlanta. Whitt holds a Master of Music from Westminster Choir College and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has studied conducting with such notables as Joseph Flummerfelt, David Willcocks, Frauke Haasemann, James Litton, and Robert Porco. Free parking is available at the church.
